Traveling the World with Mama: Black History Month 2023

Sharing more Destinations for Black History Month 2023

In honor of Black History Month 2023, we want to continue sharing destinations that highlight Black culture, history, and achievement. Our previous list featured some incredible spots, and now we have four more destinations to add to your itinerary.

1. **North Carolina Parks**: North Carolina is home to several parks with rich historical significance. The Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington recently opened a park commemorating the Battle of Forks Road and the US Colored Troops. In Raleigh, the John Chavis Memorial Park, named after a free Black preacher and Revolutionary War veteran, offers a glimpse into the state’s history. Lastly, the Gillespie Golf Course in Greensboro, once the site of a civil rights battle, is now part of the N.C. Civil Rights Trail.

2. **Coastal Mississippi**: Coastal Mississippi is a hidden gem that offers access to 12 unique communities and 62 miles of beaches. The region is steeped in African American history, with sites like the Biloxi Visitor Center, the Gallery of African American Art, and the 100 Men Hall. Follow the 2 Day African American Heritage Itinerary to explore these historical landmarks.

3. **Birmingham, Alabama**: This year marks the 60th anniversary of the bombing of Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church, a tragic event that catalyzed the city’s civil rights movement. Visit the church to learn about its history and read “Dear Denise: Letters to the Sister I Never Knew” by Lisa McNair, sister of one of the bombing victims.

4. **Chicago, Illinois**: Chicago celebrates Black History Month with a focus on Black achievements and creativity. Explore museum exhibits highlighting Black artists and historical events, such as The March at The DuSable Black History Museum. Take a tour of The Southside Community Art Center to view The Promised Land, an exhibit on the Great Migration. Don’t miss the Frederick Douglass Tours at the American Writers Museum and Chicago Black Restaurant Week from February 12-26, 2023.

These destinations offer unique opportunities to learn about Black history, culture, and contributions to society. As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, let’s take the time to visit these important sites and support Black-owned businesses in the process. Where will you be traveling this month to honor and learn more about Black history? Let us know in the comments below.
