Have pro-LGBT+ activists truly spoken out without being influenced by funding? – Obiri Boahen

Analysis of Controversy Surrounding the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill in Ghana

In recent times, the topic of LGBTQ+ rights has sparked heated debates and discussions in many countries around the world, and Ghana is no exception. With the recent passing of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill by the Ghanaian Parliament, the issue has come to the forefront once again.

One prominent figure who has openly questioned the motivations of those opposing the bill is Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen, a former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). In a recent interview on Okay FM, Boahen expressed his disbelief at the advocacy for homosexual rights and practices, stating that it defies logical reasoning.

Boahen specifically called out Prof Gadzekpo and Kwame Karikari for leading the opposition against the bill, questioning whether they had accepted money to do so. He argued that the idea of legalizing same-sex marriage is incomprehensible and should not be tolerated.

The anti-LGBT+ Bill aims to criminalize various aspects of homosexuality, including promotion, advocacy, funding, and the acts themselves. However, the Ministry of Finance has advised President Akufo-Addo against signing the bill into law, citing potential repercussions on the country’s financial support from international organizations.

Despite the concerns raised by Boahen and others, President Akufo-Addo has reassured the diplomatic community of Ghana’s commitment to respecting fundamental human rights and has pointed to a legal challenge to the bill’s constitutionality. A concerned citizen has invoked the original jurisdiction of the Supreme Court to challenge the bill, prompting calls for patience until a ruling is issued.

The debate surrounding LGBTQ+ rights in Ghana is far from over, and it is clear that there are strong opinions on both sides of the issue. As the country continues to navigate this controversial topic, it is crucial for all parties involved to engage in respectful and constructive dialogue in order to reach a fair and just resolution.
