PwC Finds Hedge Funds’ Continued Strong Interest in Long-Term Crypto Investments Despite Decreased Proportion Investing

Traditional Hedge Funds Show Decline in Crypto Investments, Long-Term Outlook Remains Positive: PwC Report

The traditional hedge fund industry has been navigating the world of crypto assets in recent years, with some notable shifts in sentiment and investment strategies. According to a new report by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the proportion of traditional hedge funds investing in crypto assets has actually declined in the past 12 months. However, the long-term outlook for crypto investments remains positive.

The Global Crypto Hedge Fund Report revealed that the percentage of funds with crypto exposure dropped from 37% to 29% in 2022. Despite this decline, none of the traditional hedge funds surveyed plan to decrease their exposure to crypto assets this year. Additionally, more than a third of funds without crypto exposure expressed curiosity but are waiting for the asset class to mature further.

The report also highlighted the mixed sentiment among traditional financial institutions towards crypto, with regulatory uncertainty being a key factor in investment decisions. Almost a quarter of hedge funds are reassessing their strategies due to the regulatory environment in the U.S., with some considering relocating to more crypto-friendly jurisdictions.

Despite market volatility and the collapse of some crypto businesses, the report predicts that investment in crypto assets will remain strong in 2023. Jon Garvey, PwC United States’ global financial services leader, emphasized that traditional hedge funds are increasingly dedicated to the market in the long term and are even expanding their crypto assets under management.

Overall, the report suggests that while there may be some hesitation and caution among traditional hedge funds regarding crypto investments, the long-term interest in the asset class remains robust. As the regulatory environment evolves and the crypto market matures, we may see more traditional hedge funds entering the space or increasing their exposure to crypto assets.

It will be interesting to see how the landscape of crypto investments continues to shift in the coming months and years. As more clarity and regulatory frameworks are established, we may see even greater participation from traditional financial institutions in the crypto market. Stay tuned for more updates on this evolving trend in the finance industry.
