Living in Austin: What I Love and Hate About It
Living in Austin, Texas, is a unique experience that comes with both positives and negatives. Having lived in the city for almost two years, I have come to appreciate many aspects of Austin while also recognizing its drawbacks. In this blog post, I will highlight what I love and hate about living in Austin.
What I Love About Austin:
1. The People: Texans are known for their friendly and welcoming nature, and Austin is no exception. The people in Austin are incredibly kind and generous, always willing to lend a helping hand, whether it’s bringing over a homemade meal when you’re sick or greeting you on the street with a smile.
2. The Food Scene: Austin’s food scene is diverse and thriving, offering a wide range of cuisines to suit every palate. From TexMex to barbecue to sushi, there is no shortage of delicious dining options in the city.
3. The Water: As someone who values living near water, I appreciate Austin’s proximity to lakes and rivers. Whether it’s paddleboarding on Town Lake or taking a dip in Barton Springs, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the water in Austin.
4. The Winters: Austin’s mild winters are a welcome relief from the scorching summers. With temperatures hovering around 70 degrees and clear blue skies, the winter weather in Austin is truly delightful.
5. Live Music: Austin is renowned for its live music scene, with countless venues offering performances every night of the week. Whether you’re a fan of country, rock, or blues, you’re sure to find a great show in Austin.
6. Dog-Friendliness: Austin is a dog-friendly city, with many businesses and public spaces welcoming furry companions. I love being able to bring my dog everywhere I go, whether it’s to a local park or a neighborhood restaurant.
What I Hate About Austin:
1. The Crowds: As Austin has grown in popularity, it has become increasingly crowded, especially on weekends. Finding parking and navigating through busy restaurants and streets can be a challenge.
2. The High Cost of Living: Austin is an expensive city to live in, with housing prices continuing to rise. The cost of living in Austin can be prohibitive for many residents, especially when it comes to purchasing property.
3. Poor Walkability: Austin is not a very walkable city, with two highways dividing the city and making it difficult to traverse on foot. For someone who enjoys walking, the lack of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure can be frustrating.
4. The Allergies: Central Texas is known for its high pollen counts and allergens, making it challenging for allergy sufferers. The daily allergy reports on local news serve as a reminder of the pervasive allergens in the air.
5. The Heat: Austin’s summers can be scorching, with temperatures reaching above 100 degrees. The intense heat can make outdoor activities uncomfortable and limit time spent in the sun.
6. The Isolation: Austin is located relatively far from other major cities, making it challenging to travel and explore beyond the immediate area. The distance to other metropolitan areas can contribute to a sense of isolation for some residents.
In conclusion, while there are many things to love about living in Austin, there are also aspects of the city that can be challenging. Ultimately, whether or not Austin is the right fit for you will depend on your priorities and preferences. Despite its drawbacks, I have found happiness in Austin and plan to continue enjoying all that the city has to offer.
